Chipper's HR not enough for the Braves

Chipper Jones hit an opening day homerun but it was enough for the Atlanta Braves. Tim Hudson pitched well, but Odalis Perez matched him throughout the game, until it was left up to each teams bullpen. Ryan Zimmeran was the hero of the game with a Walk Off Homerun to allow the Washington Nationals to win on opening day in there brand new state of the art ballpark.

The Braves will Carry 12 Pitchers to start the season.

Player Profile: John Smoltz

John Smoltz is one of the top Starting Pitchers in the league and has been for the past 15 years, except of course the few seasons he was the top Closer in the league.
He is still going strong at age 40 aside from a few aches and pains. I know he has some soreness right now but I think they are just being cautious and setting him up to start against them Mets next week. Smoltz is good for 12 to 15 wins a year and at least 200 innings barring any major injuries. Look for Smoltz even at age 40 to be the leader of this pitching staff again in 2008 along with Tim Hudson.

Tyler Yates Traded

The Atlanta Braves Traded Tyler Yates yesterday in a very minor trade. They
are basically looking to trim down there roster for the start of the 2008 Major League Season. I expect Todd Redmond who they received from Pittsburgh in the trade will be sent to the Minors to start the season.

Player Profile: Brian Mcann

Brian Mcann is becoming one of the top all around Catchers in the National League. He hits for average and even has a little pop from a position that is not always known for giving a lot of offense. Mcann also handles the Braves pitchers very well he has a solid frame back behind the plate and may not have the strongest arm in the league but he is above average throwing out runners. Mcann is set to be the Atlanta Braves starting catcher and one of there top hitters for the 2008 Major League Season

Smoltz Headed to DL

John Smoltz may start the 2008 Major League Baseball Season on the DL. He has soreness in his shoulder and it may be best for the Braves and Smoltz if he starts off on the DL. They would set it up where he could be ready to start against the Mets on April 6th. He will try to throw later in the week to see if he can make his first scheduled start, but if not they will go ahead and place him on the DL to make room for another pitcher on the roster while he is out.

Javy Lopez Retires

Trying one last time to make the Braves Javy Lopez decides its time to hang it up after returning to Spring Training with his original team. Javy played during 10 of the 14 Braves Division titles. He was well known for his power hitting and actually set a record for homeruns for a Catcher in 1 season, when he his 42 homeruns in the 2003 season. Javy now 37, will retire to be at home with his family after struggling the make a Major league roster the last 3 seasons.

Player Profile: Chipper Jones

Chipper Jones is one of the longest running Atlanta Braves right behind John Smoltz. Chipper has been an everyday player since joining the Braves in the early
90's. He is back at Third Base the last few years after taking some time in the outfield. Chipper has been around, but has not lost his swing. He was barely edged out by Matt Holiday for the National Leauge batting title in 2007 as he posted a .337
batting average. If he can stay healthy in 2008 I expect that he will put out similiar numbers and carry the Braves throughout the year.
